'It 2' Repeats at #1, 'Hustlers' Exceeds Expectations & 'The Goldfinch' Flies into a Wall
It was a mixed bag of a weekend for Warner Bros. which saw It: Chapter Two deliver a strong hold and retain the weekend's #1 spot at the box office, but their new release, The Goldfinch, bombed, delivering one of the worst openings ever for a wide release. Alternatively, STXfilms's Hustlers exploded out of the gates with the studio's largest opening in its five year history as well as star Jennifer Lopez's largest live-action opening of all-time. With an estimated $40.7 million, WB and New Line's It: Chapter Two topped the weekend for the second week in a row, dipping just -55% compared to its opening weekend and pushing the film's domestic cume over $153 million after ten days in release. In addition to that, the horror sequel added another $47 million internationally this weekend for a global tally that now stands at $323.3 million. That total includes a $4.7 million #1 opening in France while

Norman Lear Breaks an Emmy Record, Becomes the Oldest Winner Ever
Norman Lear was already one of the most-honored people in television history, but now he has another distinction to add to his long career: At 97 years and 49 days, he’s the oldest person ever to win an Emmy Award.

Asked about the achievement, he said backstage at the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday: “I don’t think about it a lot,” and quipped, “I like waking up in the morning.”

Lear set the record on Saturday as one of the producers of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons.'” The ABC program, which included live peformances of episodes from two of Lear’s seminal 1970s comedies, won in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category.

Kellyanne Conway Blasts Background Check Supporters to Deflect From Trump’s About Face

On Sunday, White House counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway attempted to deflect attention from President Donald Trump, who once again backtracked after voicing support for background checks. Conway told Fox News, “We’re not going to allow bad actors who should not have firearms in the first place to be the excuse for a bunch of liberals and socialists to confiscate firearms from law-abiding citizens who have legally procured them.”

Conway continued, “I’m not going to allow people who are constantly maligning and deriding our law enforcement to

          TV Review: ‘Transparent’ Series Finale

Amazon’s “Transparent” will have a chapter, or a section of one, in some to-be-written history of television, in part thanks to how brazen and how daring its ideas were for its moment. Some of those were ideas that came to seem simply logical in retrospect: The show was a pathbreaker for trans representation onscreen, casting trans performers to play characters whose journeys they shared. This came years before FX’s more polished “Pose,” and represents a meaningful step forward; it’s “Transparent’s” legacy, and a good one.

Others of the show’s choices — its assertiveness in moving its characters in radical new decisions,

Jane Lynch has been crowned the winner of the 2019 guest comedy actress Emmy for her role of comic Sophie Lennon on Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

This was Lynch’s second consecutive nomination for the role but first win. However, it is her fifth Emmy overall, after winning a short form statue in 2017, as well as reality host trophies for “Hollywood Game Night” in 2014 and 2015, and a supporting comedy actress statue for “Glee” in 2010.

This year, Lynch was nominated alongside a duo of “Saturday Night Live” hosts in Sandra Oh and Emma Thompson, a duo of “Fleabag

‘State of the Union’ Wasn’t Even Nominated at First, But Wins Short-Form Series Emmy
“State of the Union” was initially snubbed for an Emmy nomination as outstanding short-form comedy or drama series — but it wound up winning the award itself on Sunday night.

The SundanceTV short, which starred Rosamund Pike and Chris O’Dowd as a couple meeting in a pub before couples counseling — and discussing their troubled marriage — ran for ten, 10-minute episodes in May. The short aired both on SundanceTV as a week-long 10 p.m. strip, and also on SundanceTV.com and the SundanceTV app.

Not only did “State of the Union” win in the key short-form series category, but Pike won

Did Emmy Voters Just Troll Megan Amram and ‘An Emmy for Megan?’
Megan Amram, who created the tongue-in-cheek short-form series “An Emmy for Megan” for the express purpose of winning an Emmy, has failed to win an Emmy for the show for the second year in a row.

But the way in which she lost in the Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category this year may have a particular sting to it — because Television Academy voters gave the prize to Nick Hornby’s series “State of the Union,” a show that wouldn’t even have been nominated if it weren’t for “An Emmy for Megan.”

One of the episodes in the first season of “An Emmy for Megan” in 2018 specifically pointed out that the Academy didn’t have any rules about minimum length for a short-form episode. That episode lasted less than 30 seconds — and after last year’s Emmys, the Academy changed its rules to require that short-form series

Advantage, ‘Jojo Rabbit’: Here’s What Happens After the Tiff Audience Award
The morning after “Jojo Rabbit” made its world premiere in Toronto, Taika Waititi, the 49-year-old New Zealand actor-writer-director, was understandably confused. His movie played through the roof with audiences who cheered his lighthearted but serious fable about a lonely young Nazi enthusiast (Roman Griffin Davis) and his imaginary friend Hitler (Waititi), who finds himself fighting for dominance with a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) hidden by his activist mother (Scarlett Johansson) behind a wall in his house.

But the day after its debut the film was hovering around 50 on Metacritic. That’s why figuring out the Oscar potential for this movie is dicey. You don’t have to have critical acclaim to win an Oscar. Look at “Bohemian Rhapsody” last year (Metacritic: 49). But that was a worldwide $893 million blockbuster based on the enormous appeal of Queen and Freddie Mercury. The Oscar win went to Rami Malek.

Ash Ketchum’s First Pokemon League Title Has Fans Going Crazy
It’s the anime equivalent of LeBron winning his first ring or Scorsese winning his first Oscar. After 22 years on the air, the long-running “Pokemon” anime series gave fans what they’ve always wanted, as Ash Ketchum finally won his first Pokemon league title Sunday.

For decades, Ash has traveled through the various regions of the world of Pokemon with his buddy Pikachu, meeting friends and foiling the plots of Team Rocket. Along the way, he has caught dozens of Pokemon and competed in six regional league tournaments, but every time he has fallen short. He did bring a trophy back to his home in Pallet Town way back in 1999 by winning all four badges in the Orange League, but that league did not have a full tournament.

‘La Llorona’ Film Review: Jayro Bustamante Examines Real-Life Historical Horror in Impressive Third Feature

          • The Wrap
‘La Llorona’ Film Review: Jayro Bustamante Examines Real-Life Historical Horror in Impressive Third Feature
For his third and most tonally adventurous feature to date, socially perceptive writer-director Jayro Bustamante repurposes one of Latin America’s most ubiquitous supernatural legends to fiercely examine genocide against indigenous people in his native Guatemala. Invoking genre narrative devices, the entrancingly evocative “La Llorona” (“The Weeping Woman”) walks between fact and myth to engender a shrewdly frightening piece of political horror.

Sadistic military dictator General Enrique Monteverde (Julio Diaz), a fictionalized incarnation of the country’s former president Efraín Ríos Montt, stands accused of sanctioning the murder of thousands of Maya Ixil people in the Central American nation between 1982 and 1983. Battling health complications but still refusing to accept any fault, Monteverde is found guilty thanks to the courageous testimony of Ixil women still mourning their dead. Bustamante shoots the courtroom as a spiritual confessional devoid of natural light.

Notwithstanding the evidence, Monteverde’s accomplices in power swiftly dismiss the verdict against the ailing villain.

Ken Burns on ‘Country Music’ and Why Merle, Hank, Dwight, Loretta and Lil Nas X Matter
The phrase “the Ken Burns effect” is specifically the name of a function on Apple computers that makes all your static old family photos move around on screen like something out of “The Civil War.” But there’s another Ken Burns effect worth talking about as his “Country Music” comes to TV screens: the impact one of his documentary mini-series can have on an entire major musical genre. As heavily debated as the inclusions and exclusions of “Jazz” might have been in 2001, few would argue that the art form isn’t still enjoying some kind of afterglow from that massively seen series.
